The town of Danville, Ca., boasts small town atmosphere with outstanding quality of life. Often referred to as the heart of the San Ramon Valley, Danville was first populated by the Bay Miwok Indians who lived by the creeks and camped on Mount Diablo in the summer.
Danville was settled and named by Americans who came for the California Gold Rush. The Inman brothers chose Danville as the name of the town in the 1850’s and Danville opened its first Post Office in 1860. By 1869 there were over 1,800 people in the Danville and Lafayette areas.
When the Southern Pacific Railroad came to the valley in 1891 Danville changed dramatically. Farmers populated the valley and with the railroad’s arrival stores opened as the town’s focus shifted from Front St. to Hartz Ave.
The twentieth century saw Danville impacted by the wars, depression and immigration. Filled with farm lands for much of the century, Danville continued to grow reaching a population of 40,484 in 2000. While Danville has evolved over the years, it retains the charm of a small town but with upscale amenities.
The Museum of the San Ramon Valley chronicles Danville’s history and the Tao House stands as the home of America’s Nobel winning playwright Eugene O’Neill.
